Review: Is Cozey the perfect pet couch? We find out…

Canadian furniture brand Cozey has launched Down Under, so we got our hands on one of their couches to give it a test run – here’s what we found.

Cozey‘s whole pitch is modularity: you choose your own configuration, and every cover – cushions, frames, the lot – comes off and can be thrown in the wash. This is a beautiful idea in a showroom. Whether it survives contact with an actual household, we were about to find out.

Over the course of a few weeks we introduced the couch to real life, in the form of muddy pug paws, snotty-nosed toddlers, spilled yoghurts, and a red wine spill that doesn’t need to be discussed any further.

Is it tough to put together?

We ordered the Ciello XL 4-Seater Right Chaise in Sunset Beige – an optimistic colour choice for a family of four and a dog. But we’re guinea pigs and ready to test. Being modular means you can choose your own configurations. Which is great. It also means it arrives in about 12 different boxes, which can be a little overwhelming.

Once it was all dragged inside and the boxes were emptied of their contents, it seemed like a daunting task. Each cushion and frame needed its cover fitted individually, which in the end turned out to be more tedious than difficult. The real test came in connecting the sections – there’s a knack to sliding them together, so you wouldn’t want to be changing your configuration every second week. Saying that, if in a couple years we want to bolt on a new section or chaise, it’s nice to know we can.

How does it hold up?

For the first fortnight, we thought the cushions were maybe a little too soft and fluffy and you had a tendency to fall between the cracks as each section has its own cushion. This settled down after a couple of weeks, the cushions flattened just enough that we stopped losing family members, while staying soft enough that the couch has become the most popular napping location in the house. We have fallen asleep on it more than any couch we’ve owned, which we’re undecided if that’s a reflection of us or the couch.

Does it clean like a dream?

Yes and no.

The muddy paw prints – inevitable, in hindsight, the moment we chose a colour named after a sunset – didn’t wipe off as easily as promised. A scrub left still left faint marks behind. But the covers came off without a fight, went into the washing machine, and returned looking freshly unwrapped. The red wine – again, no further comment – vanished after a single cycle.

The verdict

It’s a decent couch for a busy household – soft enough to fall asleep on, forgiving enough to survive pugs and toddlers and everything that comes with that, but still classy enough that when everyone else is asleep you can have a glass of red on it and forget you’re in your own living room. And if you happen to spill that glass, rest assured it can be washed out in a jiffy.

So, when 12 boxes arrive at your doorstep and you’re covered in sweat trying to slide those connector things into each other, just remember that nothing worth having comes easy. And Cozey is worth having.
